80/20 or 90/10 microfiber: which blend should a buyer specify?

4 minHome CleaningUpdated

By SINOCLEAN · Buyer sourcing guide

The short answer

Specify the fibre names as well as the ratio. An 80/20 polyester/polyamide cloth and a 70/30 viscose/polyester roll are different material systems. A 90/10 proposal needs its own confirmed specification and sample. Choose a blend together with construction, size, GSM and intended surface; the ratio alone cannot establish cleaning performance or value.

Why a percentage is not a complete product specification

A shorthand ratio is useful only when both parties agree which fibre each number represents. Write 80% polyester / 20% polyamide rather than only 80/20. Record whether the declaration applies to the cleaning fabric or a whole product that also has a backing, core or trim.

For a comparison, keep finished size, construction, edge and washing condition aligned. A cloth with a different texture or finishing history cannot isolate the effect of changing the blend, even if the supplier presents the comparison as a material upgrade.

Examples from the current catalogue

The examples below are published catalogue specifications, not laboratory comparisons. They identify products that a buyer can request and show why the fibre names matter. Final order details should still be confirmed against the quotation and an approved sample.

How to evaluate a 90/10 quotation

SINOCLEAN describes 80/20 and 90/10 among its microfiber customisation capabilities. The SM21 examples used here do not identify a standard 90/10 catalogue code. Ask for the proposed product code or sample reference, full composition and construction before treating a 90/10 offer as equivalent to a stocked item.

Compare the same surface, soil, water or cleaner, pressure and washing condition. Record residue, wet handling, absorption and edge behaviour. A different polyamide percentage is not, by itself, proof of a better finish, a longer usable life or a justified price premium.

Single-component and blended constructions

The catalogue includes a 100% polyamide glass cloth, SM21039. That composition statement does not identify a bicomponent yarn structure, splitting process or a measured fibre diameter. Likewise, two fibre names on a label do not establish how the yarn was manufactured.

When a retailer requires a particular yarn architecture, ask for that technical specification explicitly. Do not infer single-component or bicomponent production details from a finished-product photograph or from a fibre-percentage field.

Make supplier quotations comparable

Send one enquiry sheet listing the selected code or proposed construction, full fibre names, percentages, size, GSM, edge, colours and pieces per selling pack. State the intended surface and any retailer test requirement. Ask each supplier to identify departures from that sheet.

Approve the material statement together with the physical sample and pack artwork. If composition is a contractual requirement, agree the relevant verification and acceptance rule before production. Do not put a test result or a tolerance into the order merely because it appears in an unrelated supplier report.

Example: comparing a stock cloth with a custom blend

Use SM21001 as the 80/20 grid-cloth reference. If a supplier proposes a 90/10 alternative, request the same finished dimensions, construction, GSM and edge before comparing samples. List any unavoidable changes on the quotation. Otherwise, a difference in result may be due to the construction or finishing rather than the ratio.

Record the decision in two parts: whether the sample meets the cleaning brief, and whether its specification matches the proposed order. A buyer may accept either blend for a particular programme, but the delivered material declaration must describe the approved product. Do not accept the shorthand 70/30 without the two fibre names.

Copy these fields into your enquiry or approval record

Catalogue references and scope

The item specifications cited in this guide come from the linked SINOCLEAN catalogue entries. They identify the proposed products; they are not independent performance results. Sample routines and calculation examples are buyer guidance, not reports of completed factory or laboratory tests. Confirm the final specification and supporting evidence with the quotation.

Questions buyers ask

Is 90/10 always better than 80/20?

No universal ranking follows from the blend alone. Compare the specified construction and samples against the intended cleaning task.

Does 70/30 always mean polyester and polyamide?

No. SM21063 is listed as 70% viscose / 30% polyester. Always state the fibre names with the percentages.

Can I order a standard 90/10 SM21 code from this comparison?

This guide does not identify a standard 90/10 SM21 code. Request a confirmed proposal and sample reference for a 90/10 requirement.
