The odour problem is the whole story
Ask any category buyer why shoppers replace a kitchen sponge and the answer is not wear. It is smell. PU foam holds water in closed pockets, stays damp on the sink edge, and the bacteria that colonise it produce the sour smell most people recognise within one to two weeks. The sponge still functions perfectly. It goes in the bin because of how it smells.
Wood pulp cotton behaves differently in a way that seems like a defect until you understand it. It dries rigid — stiff enough that a first-time user may think it has been ruined. Run it under water and it returns to full flexibility in seconds. Because it dries hard rather than damp, it does not sour, and replacement is driven by genuine wear rather than by the bin test. That single property is why the material has been taking European and Japanese shelf space for a decade.
Where each material genuinely wins
Wood pulp cotton absorbs about ten times its dry weight against roughly five to seven times for foam, so it lifts more spill per pass. It is plant-derived and home-compostable with no plastic binder, which lets a pack carry an environmental claim that survives scrutiny. It prints beautifully across its full surface, which makes it the strongest promotional and gifting item in any cleaning range. And it ships compressed and flat, cutting freight volume by roughly two thirds.
Foam sponge wins on unit cost, on softness — it is gentler on delicate glassware straight out of the pack — and on familiarity, which matters more than buyers like to admit. Laminating an abrasive face to foam is also cheaper and more established than laminating to wood pulp, so heavy-duty scouring combinations remain a foam stronghold.
The honest arguments against switching
Three things work against wood pulp, and a supplier who does not raise them is not being straight with you.
First, the dry-hard behaviour needs explaining on pack. Without a line of copy — "dries firm, softens instantly with water" — you will collect returns from shoppers who think the product is faulty. This is the single most common failure in a wood pulp launch.
Second, unit cost is higher, usually 20–40% depending on thickness and density. Compressed freight recovers a good part of that on the landed cost, but not all of it, and not at all if you are buying domestically.
Third, it is not the right tool for burnt-on residue. Wood pulp wipes and absorbs; it does not scour. A kitchen programme built on wood pulp still needs steel wool or an abrasive pad alongside it. Treat wood pulp as a replacement for the wiping sponge, not for the whole category.
Landed cost, not unit cost
The comparison importers get wrong is comparing FOB unit prices. Wood pulp ships compressed at roughly a third of the volume of an equivalent count of expanded foam. On a full container that difference is substantial, and it lands in the same column as the higher unit price. Before rejecting wood pulp on price, run both options through your own freight and duty model with real carton dimensions. The gap is often around half of what the unit prices imply.
Specifying wood pulp so you get what you sampled
Three numbers control the product. Thickness runs 2.0–4.0 mm dry; 3.0 mm is the retail standard, 4.0 mm reads premium and absorbs more. Density separates a hard-drying board from a soft commodity sponge, and it is the specification most often left vague — put "medium-firm" or "firm" in the order, and keep a reference sample. Cellulose content should be 100% wood pulp with no plastic binder if the pack makes a compostability claim; a binder invalidates it.
Also fix the compression state. Wood pulp can ship compressed or pre-expanded. Compressed saves freight and looks flat on the shelf; pre-expanded shows the shopper what they are buying. Decide before the packaging is designed, because the two need different pack sizes.
What most programmes actually do
The common outcome is not a switch but a split. Foam and abrasive combinations hold the value tier where price drives the decision. Wood pulp takes the mid and premium tiers, where the odour story, the compostability claim and the printable surface all earn their place. Shoppers who care about smell trade up, and the ones who buy on price still have something to buy.
