How to wash microfiber cloths, and what care label should a private-label buyer specify?

The short answer

Wash microfiber cleaning cloths and rags separately from cotton and other lint-shedding items, use a mild detergent without fabric softener or chlorine bleach, choose a warm rather than hot setting, then air dry or tumble dry on low heat. These are common care practices, not test results. For car drying towels, see the separate wash guide. Private-label buyers should confirm the care routine for the exact cloth on samples and print it on the care label.

Cloths and rags vs car drying towels

This guide covers household and facility microfiber cleaning cloths and rags — the flat, waffle, grid and general-purpose cloths in SINOCLEAN’s home-cleaning microfiber cloth range (catalogue items such as grid and waffle constructions). It is not a car drying-towel wash page. For heavier automotive drying towels, use How to wash microfiber towels.

Why microfiber cloths need their own wash routine

Microfiber cloths are usually made from polyester and polyamide blends; SINOCLEAN catalogue items are listed in blends such as 80/20 and 81/19. Cleaning performance depends on fine fibres and open spaces in the fabric. Residues from softener, heavy detergent or lint from cotton laundry can fill those spaces. That is why most care instructions treat microfiber differently from ordinary cotton cleaning cloths.

This guide summarises commonly published care practice. It is not a laboratory method and does not claim a tested number of wash cycles for any SINOCLEAN item.

How to wash microfiber cloths in 6 steps

  1. Step 1. Sort: separate microfiber cloths and rags from cotton and other lint-shedding laundry; keep kitchen grease cloths apart from glass and screen cloths.
  2. Step 2. Shake out crumbs or grit, or rinse loose soil, before washing.
  3. Step 3. Wash with a mild liquid detergent; do not add fabric softener or chlorine bleach.
  4. Step 4. Use a warm rather than hot setting; follow the temperature on the item’s care label.
  5. Step 5. Rinse well so detergent residue does not remain in the fibres.
  6. Step 6. Air dry, or tumble dry on low or no heat; avoid ironing.

Coloured packs, lint and care-label checks

For multi-colour retail packs, check whether colours should be washed separately; see the colourfastness and dye-transfer guide. If a buyer complains about lint on glass or screens, separate edge, face and laundry factors with a controlled sample check as described in Why does a microfiber cloth leave lint?.

What a private-label buyer should put on the care label

For a retail or distributor programme, the wash routine is part of the product specification. Agree the wording before mass production and check it on samples:

  • Wash temperature and whether machine or hand wash is recommended.
  • Instructions on softener, bleach and tumble drying.
  • Whether kitchen, glass and general-purpose SKUs share one care text or need separate labels.
  • Language versions required by the destination market.

If shrinkage or shape after washing matters, compare dimensions before and after the agreed routine, as described in the prewash and dimensional stability guide.

· FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Can you wash microfiber cloths with fabric softener?

Common care guidance says no: softeners can leave a residue on the fibres and reduce cleaning performance. If pack text mentions softener, verify the effect on your own samples.

Should kitchen, glass and general-purpose cloths be washed together?

Where possible, keep heavily soiled kitchen or grease cloths apart from glass and screen cloths so soils and dyes do not transfer. Wash microfiber with microfiber, not with cotton.

Is this the same as washing microfiber car drying towels?

The basic routine is similar, but car drying towels are often heavier and hold more grit. Use the dedicated guide for towels: https://www.sinocleans.com/insights/how-to-wash-microfiber-towels/

Does SINOCLEAN print care labels for private-label microfiber cloths?

Care text, labels and packaging can be arranged to your specification and confirmed on the quotation. This page does not state a tested wash-cycle count for any SKU.
